Transport spending in East Dulwich next year

We’ve just had the annual settlement in from Transport for London (TfL) - a month late but never mind. We now know where we can spend our money. It is a cause of constant frustration to me that Southwark Council can’t spend the money in transport according to our own local priorities - evreything we want to do has to be bid for and then the Mayor/TfL decides whether the scheme we wish to pursue is appropriate.  Quite how they are in a better position to judge than local elected councillors I don’t know. But that’s Labour’s definition of devolution for you. This bidding process is also the major reason why it takes a minimum of two or three years to be able to respond to new concerns or issues that local people highlight.   If you have something you want done by 2009 you need to let me know within the next six months so that I can get it in next year’s bid before June….!

But back to the good news which is that money is available to deal with:

  • Lordship Lane junction with Barry Road

  • Melford Road junction with Underhill Road

  • A 20mph zone in East Dulwich in the area between Forest Hill, Barry Rd, Lordship Lane and Wood vale.

  • Implementation of measures from Lordship Lane audit - only £20k though - almost certainly not enough.

  • Lordship Lane/East Dulwich Grove junction (where there was a crash earlier this week)

  • Goose Green School has money for its school travel plan
  • These are edited highlights. It is not the total of transport work that will take place. For example there are also a number of  bus stop improvements and a range of other measures that are borough wide like cycle training.
